Catalogue of Bassetlaw Indicators for use with TELER

Readership

The Catalogue is primarily a resource for physiotherapists and occupational therapists who use, or intend to use TELER to facilitate the delivery of their treatment or care in a hospital setting. To a lesser extent it is also a resource for physiotherapists and occupational therapists who do so, or intend to do so in other settings.

The Catalogue is not a resource for speech and language therapists who use, or intend to use TELER to facilitate the delivery of their treatment or care. However, it is possible that some of the indicators in the Catalogue are suitable for such use.

Work has started on the publication of a catalogue of indicators to serve as a resource for speech and language therapists who use, or intend to use TELER to facilitate the delivery of their treatment or care.

Other clinicians already using TELER should also find the Catalogue useful for reference purposes.

Contents

The Catalogue has five chapters:

  • TELER: A Brief Description of the System;
  • The TELER Indicator: A Brief Description;
  • Development of the Bassetlaw Indicators: Acknowledgements, background and procedure;
  • Bassetlaw Indicators for Use with TELER: A list of indicators for use by therapists; and
  • Bassetlaw Indicators for Use with TELER: Definitions of the indicators.

The Catalogue also contains two important notices and an index.

Usefulness

The indicators were developed over a period of three years, and were carefully worded so that they could be understood by anyone but could not be misinterpreted. Only where it was unavoidable was clinical terminology or jargon used. The majority of the indicators are function indicators. The remainder are component indicators. There are no quiz style indicators.

No claims are made as to the validity of the indicators. However, they have been used in hospital and community settings for a number of years by physiotherapists and occupational therapists, and found to facilitate the delivery of treatment or care.

It is hoped that the indicators will serve as a beginning, not an end, and that therapists who use them will be inspired to fill in some of the gaps in the list by developing their own indicators. Not only is the work fascinating, it is vital to enable therapists to prove their clinical effectiveness.

The Catalogue contains 104 indicators, arranged into 20 groups to facilitate their use. The groups represent clinical areas.

Durability

The Catalogue is a slim user friendly volume of 117 pages in A5 size. It is printed on high quality gloss paper and stitch bound to board covers, ensuring that the Catalogue will wear well and lie flat when opened.

All rights are reserved, and it is illegal to reproduce any part of the Catalogue in any form whatsoever without the written permission of the copyright holder, except in accordance with the provisions of the United Kingdom Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 as amended. Catalogue of TELER Normal Movement Indicators for use in Physiotherapy for Neurologically Impaired Patients

by S Mawson

Readership

While the Catalogue is primarily intended for normal movement physiotherapists who use the TELER method of clinical note making in their treatment of patients suffering neurological impairment. Bobath trained physiotherapists who treat patients suffering non-neurological deficits should also find the Catalogue useful for reference purposes.

Other clinicians who should also find the Catalogue useful for reference purposes include anyone already using TELER; physiotherapists trained in other approaches to physiotherapy and clinicians trained in other specialisms, such as occupational therapy.

Contents

The Catalogue has eight chapters, respectively entitled The Normal Movement Concept; Specifications for an Outcome Measure; TELER: A Description of the System; Development of the TELER Normal Movement Indicators; Using the Indicators; Clinical Standards for the Indicators; TELER Normal Movement Indicators: A List; and TELER Normal Movement Indicators: Definitions.

The Catalogue also contains a set of notes on using the indicators; some information about TELER; a glossary; a list of references; and an index.

Usefulness

The indicators in the Catalogue were specifically developed for use with the TELER system of clinical note making, by Bobath trained physiotherapists treating neurologically impaired patients. This does not necessarily invalidate their use with other systems of clinical note making, by other physiotherapists, or in interventions for other deficits.

While the indicators can be used with other systems of clinical note making, there are limitations on the way in which this can be done. For the purposes of copyright protection the indicators may not be used with other systems in the manner required by the TELER system, and so will yield only a fraction of the clinical information they will otherwise provide.

To ignore the Catalogue is to ignore the fact that at least some of the indicators are not necessarily approach dependent, and so are eminently useful in tracing the changes experienced by patients under treatment, irrespective of the approach to treatment being used.

Whatever the approach to physiotherapy in which they are trained, physiotherapists who treat patients with deficits other than neurological impairment should also find that the Catalogue has something to offer them. They should find that some of the indicators are useful for tracing progress when the aim of an intervention is to re-educate posture or movement.

Durability

The Catalogue is a slim volume of 75 pages in A5 size. It is printed on high quality gloss paper and stitch bound to board covers, ensuring that the Catalogue will wear well and lie flat when opened.

Rights

All rights are reserved, and it is illegal to reproduce any part of the Catalogue in any form whatsoever without the written permission of the copyright holder, except in accordance with the provisions of the United Kingdom Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 as amended. This Act has been given worldwide currency by a WTO Agreement.
